Investment Training Programme

The recruitment process for the 2009 programme is now open and will close on 30 November 2008.

Baillie Gifford has one of the most successful investment training programmes in the UK financial industry.  Almost three quarters of our existing Partners began their working lives as part of our graduate intake - so the recruitment and development of our investment graduate intake is crucial to the continued success of our business.

This section outlines the unique career opportunities that Baillie Gifford offers outstanding graduates with consistently high levels of academic achievement.  You'll read more about our Investment Training Entry Route in the next section but here are three key things to think about.

1.  What we look for - when to apply
Each year we recruit around eight graduates as trainee investment managers to join teams that specialise in specific markets (Europe, Japan, Emerging Markets, US, Fixed Interest and UK). We look for individuals with consistently high academic achievement, a recent 1st/2.1 degree in any discipline.

You don't have to be studying an economics or business degree to do this job, in fact we actively encourage applications from candidates from arts and science backgrounds. Our investment staff have studied a wide range of degrees during their time at university: classics, maths, geography, economics, medicine, history, to name but a few. We also welcome applicants seeking an early change in their professional career and are pleased to receive applications from individuals recently qualified from professional exams. We actively hire people to join our training scheme from the beginning of September to the end of November.

2.  We reward success generously
We pride ourselves on a culture where individuals flourish while benefiting from the support of strong team-based structures. Baillie Gifford is a meritocracy, so the progress of graduate trainees, both in terms of responsibility and salary, depends entirely on their abilities. Several graduates have become partners within ten years of joining the firm. The combination of the firm's consistent growth and our preference for internal promotion has provided excellent career opportunities for our investment graduate trainees.

3. Edinburgh's reputation as a financial capital
Edinburgh's role as a financial centre is growing rapidly. Not only are a number of the UK's leading financial institutions headquartered here, but an increasing number of overseas financial institutions are being attracted to the city - a direct reflection of Edinburgh's standing as the UK's second financial capital.

If this sounds like the sort of professional environment in which you would like to pursue a career, then we would like you to apply to join our Investment Training Programme.
