Our Training Programme

Baillie Gifford has a strong reputation when it comes to graduate recruitment.

We are looking for graduates to embark on a 2 year training programme, designed to provide a full understanding of Investment Operations.

Overview

Primarily attached to the Institutional Clients Accounting Department (ICAD), you will spend the first few months working in ICAD learning about the roles within the department and training as an Accountant. To find out more about ICAD, please see the section below. You will then commence a number of secondments, of up to 3 months, typically in the following departments:

  • Institutional Clients Department - responsible for the day-to-day servicing of clients on all investment issues
  • Cash Management, Settlements, Corporate Actions - responsible for cash, trade and corporate action management and processing
  • Finance - responsible for all company finance issues
  • Performance Measurement - responsible for the calculation of client investment returns
  • Retail & Investment Trusts - responsible for the accounting and administration service provided to our retail clients and for our investment trusts
  • Systems - responsible for the maintenance and development of all company systems
  • Legal, Regulatory Risk and Internal Audit - responsible for all legal issues, risk monitoring and internal departmental audit
  • Investment & Dealing - responsible for the research, selection and trading of investments
  • HR - responsible for all staffing and benefit issues
  • Printing & Publishing - responsible for the production of all company reporting and marketing brochures
  • Facilities - responsible for facilities management

The secondments will offer more than a mere overview, as you will be pitched in and expected to get your hands dirty by completing department-related tasks and projects on which you will be measured. Between these secondments, you will continue to consolidate your training within ICAD, where you will be supported by both your line manager and a mentor, to ensure you gain the maximum benefit from the programme.

Personal Development

Alongside ’on the job training’, you will also be given the chance to undertake a number of personal development training courses, such as Outward Bound, presentation skills and project management. You will study for both the IAQ and the Investment Management Certificate (IMC).

Career Prospects

As you can see you will be kept busy, however at the end of the 2 years you will have gained considerable experience and an unrivalled insight into investment operations. The successful completion of this programme and the experience gained will result in you being offered a permanent role, to be determined at the end of your training.
